This Girl

One of the greatest things about being part of a ladies hockey club is the support we give each other as women and girls, and that’s why Worksop Ladies have embraced all that the This Girl Can campaign stands for.

Back in 2015, Sport England set out to enable millions of women and girls to either get involved or get back into sporting activity. Back then, it was estimated that the campaign encouraged 1.6 million females aged between 14-40 to get active.

Recently, in February 2017, Sport England once again launched This Girl Can into the nation’s consciousness with their four-week national advertising campaign and, as well as widening their target to include 50 & 60 year-olds, they set out to tackle females’ fear of judgement while playing sport and to encourage females currently participating not to give up.

When the campaign kicked of this year, you could see that every single member of our club was affected by the message. They all created their own poster, proudly posting it on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. You could see how they all related to that girl; the one who has to try that bit harder, the one that has to overcome her fears, the one that isn’t body positive.

Not only did their photos get plenty of likes, the comments from people were all really positive; things like, “You go girl!”, “Good on you”, “Loving this!”

We’re really proud as a club in the way that we encourage others, the way we stick together, the way we nurture confidence.

Over the years Worksop Ladies has reintroduced lots of women back into sport through England Hockey’s Back to Hockey campaign, and much like This Girl Can, the emphasis has always been about overcoming fears and promoting self-confidence.

From personal experience, we’ve seen women either turn up for a session or message beforehand stating how they feel too old, too unfit, too fat or too shy. Yet, each and every time, after a session or two with other women who have been in the same boat, they have blossomed and realised that none of those perceptions of themselves were true.

We absolutely love the This Girl Can campaign and with organisations such as Sport England, England Hockey, The FA and The National Lottery continuing to encourage people back to sport, it’s an absolute must that we don’t let the momentum diminish.

Below, we see all our girls’ personal messages.
