How did you hear about Back to Hockey?

“Back in 2012 a friend saw Back to Hockey advertised at college through sports development. I hadn’t heard of Worksop Ladies or Back to Hockey until then but was intrigued to find out more. My friend then encouraged me to go along with her to the first session, and although I’d loved hockey at school I hadn’t played in over 20 years!”

Were you nervous?

“Yes, I was very nervous, and looking back I don’t think I would ever have turned up on my own, so I was extremely grateful to have the company”

What was it like?

“Quite a few of us went to the first session, including my friends and sister. The sessions were really good fun, really relaxed the coaches were great, encouraging us and not judging us on how rusty we were. I was made to feel really welcomed by everybody at the club and soon settled in.”

What happened after Back to Hockey?

“It wasn’t long afterwards that we were asked to join the club’s new 3rd team to play a match. We all said “no way, we’re not ready” but my sister was more determined and talked me into signing up; and I’ve never looked back since that day.

Mel continued, “Our first match will always stick in my memory. We turned up looking like the poor relations with a mixture of different kit. Chloe, our manager, was probably the only one who knew the rules. We still thought you started the match with a bully! Sadly, after only a few minutes of the game Chloe went off injured but we battled on and lost by at least 10-0. Regardless of that score line we really enjoyed it and have turned up every Saturday since.”

What else has Back to Hockey done for you?

“Since joining Worksop Ladies Hockey Club I have gained my coaching qualification and now coach our juniors every week. I’ve also held the post of vice-captain of the 3rd team for the past 3 years and last season (2014/15) I won Player’s Player of the year and Lass of the Grass for the year. I’d never have imagined such a thing when I rolled up to my first Back to Hockey session!”

“On top of that I always look forward to our midweek training sessions and the matches at the weekend. Hockey is such a fantastic way to keep fit while also enjoying a great sport. The club has become like a family to me and are always there for support. I can’t wait for the next season to start!”
