In our continuing series of stories, we ask Lorraine to tell us her her Back to Hockey story.
How did you hear about back to hockey?
Caroline had played for years and after a few years off due to injury decided to return to the sport. She had asked a friend of ours who was looking for a new hobby if she also wanted to give it a try so off they both went to the first session.
When they came back saying how much they enjoyed it (after stopping for a McDonald’s on the way home) I felt it a bit left out so decided to give it a whirl the following week…… I actually had serious FOMO!! (Fear of Missing Out)
Had you played Hockey before?
Only at school and as I recall I didn’t particularly enjoy it!! It always seemed to be raining and I never really grasped the rules etc.….. At school if you were good at a sport then the teachers would push you, however if you were just average you tended to be left to your own devices.
What made you come along?
Fear of missing out initially and the lure of post training fast food of course!
It’s the only time you will never feel guilty eating it.
Were you nervous?
At first I was a little bit, it’s always the same when you try something new. Everyone was in the same boat and we quickly felt at ease with one another. I was surprised by the wide age range in attendance. It also helps that I’m super chatty and wore everyone down, ask anyone in the club I have not changed.
What was it like?
Training is always great fun and a good social event, it’s nice to catch up with everyone before the hard work starts. When we played our first game I was terrified I don’t mind admitting it. However as soon as we began all fears quickly faded and we all just got on with the game, it’s so relaxed to play with the fourth team and there is never any pressure to win we just do our best. When we do pull a win out of the bag the celebrations after the game are amazing and a few bottles of Prosecco always appear……. It’s like we have won an England Hockey final!!
What happened after back to hockey?
After the season finished it was very strange to not be playing anymore…… I really missed it!
The social side still carried on, I made some new friends and reconnected with old ones so for these reasons I cannot recommend it enough. Back to hockey can be whatever you chose to make it. Use it to get fit and find your competitive spirit again or make new friends and have a good laugh (with the added bonus of getting fit anyway)
There truly is something for everyone regardless of ability, fitness or confidence. Why would you not come along and try it??
